Beelieve - Know God Intimately: God Is Self-Existence

"Before the mountains were born
or You gave birth to the earth and the world,
even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God."

Psalm 90:2

Have you ever been around a child who asks the question "Mommy, who made God?" This is a good question but one which is not easy to explain to a child or even my finite mind for that matter. The answer of course is that God did not need to be made because He has always been, and as we can see the attribute of self-existence is closely related to His being eternal and His self-sustaining.

God exists from Himself, He has always existed, and will exist forever, and no one has caused His existence, nor can anyone make it to end. There is simply no cause of His existence outside of Himself. God’s existence is necessary, not dependent on something else. He exists by His own being. The foundation of His existence is not in His will (to exist), but in His divine nature. God does not exist because He wants to, but because His very nature demands that He exist.

His self-existence is seen in the special name by which He revealed Himself to Israel, Yahweh, which means, “I am that I am” (Ex. 6:3; 3:14). Though the following passages do not specifically declare the self-existence of God, it is understood in all that is said about God as the only God and the unparalleled creator of all that exists (cf. Isa. 40:12-17, 21-26; 44:24; 45:5-7 Ps 90:2 Ps 102:25, 26, 27; Isa 40:28, 29, 30, 31; Jonn 5:26; Rev 4:10).

I know that it is hard to understand that something or someone has always been – without a beginning or an end; but just as a little child asks the question, ‘Who made God?’ and then accepts the answer we give them in childlike faith; so should we accept in faith that God is and always was….

My faith is not in something that was created by a finite man like so many of the so called ‘religions’ of this world. The self-existence of God is beyond my understanding, but its truth brings comfort, peace and strength to my heart to know that our God exists independently of all things and is always there for me as His child. Yes, it gives me great comfort to know that a self-existence God promises the following:

"I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU," Heb 13:5

None of the gods or idols made by man can give us such peace and comfort. Only Yahweh Himself can provide a promise such as this!

It is right and proper that this idea can blow our minds. God should be God...immense, and infinite without beginning and end...if I can grasp Him easily He wouldn't be God. Loved this! Good stuff! Filled me with warm Ffuzzies as I read it! Blessings to you today!

Amen Michele. We just can't wrap our minds around it. My husband and I were finishing up the book of Job last night and when God was speaking to Job (and his "friends") He didn't use the personal pronouns "Me" or "I" really, He was speak of Himself as God (as if it was someone else talking). It really caught my attention. It made me wonder if the speaker was the Holy Spirit at the time.

God is God -- He is the Great I Am. Who WAS, Who IS, and Who IS TO COME. Amazing!

Love,
Beth

As a child I used to ask my dad...well who said God could be God? But He just always was. He is the I AM. Sometimes hard to comphrend but with Faith we believe because it is the truth and HE is the Way the Truth and the Life!

Our finite minds often try to put God in a box that fits our limited understanding. I can't understand the ways of my husband some days, how can I possibly even begin to think that I can understand God's ways!

Great post, sis. Love you.

Great post, Michele! I truly love how God exists - so hard to fathom but easy for me to believe. :)
